Exciting news and changes that benefit our community
Community Update
Dear UVA Health Community,

This spring has been a whirlwind of celebrations, achievements, and change. Here are a few highlights and updates from the last several weeks at UVA Health.

UVA Health honored among Newsweek’s Best Maternity Hospitals 2022:
We’re thrilled to announce UVA Health Medical Center has been recognized for its high-quality care of new mothers and babies, earning a place on Newsweek’s 2022 list of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals. This tremendous honor is only possible thanks to a collaborative effort from our UVA Women’s Services and UVA Children’s teams. Thank you to all the physicians, nurses, certified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and team members who provide such excellent care.

Baby formula shortage:
For parents who depend on baby formula, the current shortage has raised concern and questions about how to care for the dietary needs of babies. Our UVA Children's clinical teams have been reaching out to parents of our youngest patients via MyChart and other means to provide information and resources to help concerned parents during this shortage. As always, we encourage parents to talk with your baby’s doctor if you have any concerns about your child’s health and nutrition. Our UVA Children’s registered dietitians and infant-feeding experts Patti Perks, Olivia Obertello, and Tegan Medico have also provided answers to common questions in a recent Healthy Balance blog post.

Victories and milestones in cancer care:
UVA Health and the Charlottesville-based Focused Ultrasound Center announced the launch of the Focused Ultrasound Cancer Immunotherapy Center, the world’s first center dedicated to advancing a focused ultrasound and cancer immunotherapy treatment that could revolutionize 21st-century cancer care. Our investment in this state-of-the-art center will create new jobs in our community, fund laboratory research studies and clinical trials, and expand treatment options for cancer patients across the globe. Also in cancer news, Delegate Sally Hudson and Senator Creigh Deeds presented a Virginia General Assembly commendation recognizing our designation as a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our extraordinary teams push the boundaries of what’s possible in cancer care, education, and research. With this designation, we’re excited to continue offering the best care imaginable to our communities here in Virginia and beyond.

IV iodinated contrast shortage:
Due to a COVID-related factory shutdown overseas, hospitals across the globe are experiencing a severe shortage of IV iodinated contrast – the agent used for accurate x-ray-based imaging such as CT scans. For patients, this means some procedures may need to be rescheduled when safe to do so to provide imaging for patients with life/limb-threatening conditions. Patients who need to be rescheduled will be contacted directly by the Imaging Scheduling Team. So far, our teams have been outstanding in conserving our supply of IV iodinated contrast and we anticipate moving back towards our normal capacity by July 1. Additional information on this shortage and answers to related questions are available at uvahealth.com.

The month of May was full of extraordinary celebrations:
Last month was packed with celebrations for our team members. We began the month celebrating both National Nurses Week and UVA Health Week. This year’s celebrations included spirit days, special events, gifts, and more to honor and thank the champions of our health system: our 16,0000 people. We then celebrated the School of Nursing and School of Medicine’s Class of 2022 graduates – sending them out across the nation (and keeping many here) to advance the field of healthcare. We look forward to their successes to come and congratulate them on their hard work and excellent scholarship.

Wishing you and your loved ones health and happiness,

K. Craig Kent, MD
